For 14 countries the eligible area is the whole territory of the country, namely for Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia and Republic of Moldova. In 2 countries only certain regions are eligible: in Italy these eligible regions are: Lombardia, Bolzano/Bozen, Trento, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Emilia Romagna, Umbria, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, Puglia Basilicata, and in Ukraine: Cjermovestka Oblast, Ivano-Frankiviska Oblast, Zakarpatska Oblast and Odessa Oblast.

The South East Europe area is the most diverse, heterogeneous and complex transnational area in Europe, made up of a broad mix of countries. The emergence of new countries and with it the establishment of new frontiers has changed the patterns of political, economic, social and cultural relationships. South East European countries are:

  • Albania
  • Austria
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy *
  • Republic of Macedonia
  • Republic of Moldova
  • Montenegro
  • Romania
  • Serbia
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Ukraine *

* only some of its regions.

The area has been undergoing a fundamental change in economic and production patterns following the 1990 changes. Scholarly journals in the post communistic countries were mainly organized and financed by the governmental institutions with the local members of editorial boards, without significant implementation of international standard, mainly published on classical paper technology, without electronic publishing, as well as with closed system of authors and readers.

South East European Journal intends to include members of boards mainly from the countries of this region in order to publish scholarly papers with the Open Access philosophy on the Open Journal Systems platform.
